TBF-QM-42 Queen Mary’s Diamond Bangles

42. Queen Mary’s Diamond Bangles

It has been incorrectly reported by Field that the Maharajah of Bikaner presented these diamond bangles to Queen Mary in 1907.[1] It has also been incorrectly reported that these two bangles clip together.[2] These bangles, which are “each set with 39 brilliants, the gold sides finely engraved”,[3] are likely to be of Indian manufacture.[4] It can be revealed that they were in fact presented to Queen Mary as a wedding gift in 1893 from the Bombay Presidency, together with ‘Queen Mary’s Bombay Diamond Solitaire Earrings’,[5] on behalf of a committee chaired by Lady Harris.[6]

Queen Mary was photographed wearing them occasionally,[7] and in turn she presented them to The Queen as a wedding present in 1947; and they were described in the list of wedding presents as “two bracelets, diamond all round. Indian bangles”.[8]
