TBF-QM-10 Queen Mary’s Boucheron Loop Tiara

10. Queen Mary’s Boucheron Loop Tiara

In 1901 whilst on a tour of South Africa, at Parliament House in Cape Town, Queen Mary was presented with a gift of 675 diamonds, totalling 102¾ carats,[1] from the “Directors of the De Beers Mine”.[2] Queen Mary referred to these simply in her diary as that she “received some beautiful presents”.[3]

On 26 April 1902,[4] Queen Mary commissioned Boucheron to create a tiara using these diamonds, which was described by Munn as a “diamond tiara in the form of oval loops containing stylized flowers and leaves”.[5] This finished tiara can be seen illustrated in Munn’s publication Tiaras,[6] and it also featured in Queen Mary’s photographic jewellery inventory.[7] It was worn by Queen Mary in 1905, in an official photograph to mark “the visit to India in 1905-06”.[8]

In 1911 the decision was taken to dismantle the tiara, with the diamonds used to create ‘The Delhi Durbar Tiara’.[9]
