QEII-33 The Queen’s Sapphire Chrysanthemum Brooch

This message #1 was written by Boffer pre-2013.

33. The Queen’s Sapphire Chrysanthemum Brooch

This brooch consists of a stylised chrysanthemum “mounted in platinum having a raised centre of sapphires with the petals set in diamonds”.[1] This brooch was presented to The Queen, whilst still Princess Elizabeth on 31st April 1946, as a joint gift from Sir James Laing & Sons Ltd. and the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company Ltd. following the launch of the ship British Princess.[2]

This brooch can be seen illustrated in Young,[3] and it is worn occasionally by The Queen, especially in the early years of her marriage.[4] It was pictured worn most notably by The Queen in 1947, at Broadlands, during her honeymoon.[5]
