QEII-13 The Queen’s Australian Wattle Brooch

This message #1 was written by Boffer pre-2013.
13. The Queen’s Australian Wattle Brooch

This diamond spray brooch is in the form of a spray of wattle, the national flower of Australia. It was designed by Paul Charles Schneller, and made by the Melbourne-based jeweller William Drummond & Co.[1]

This brooch was subsequently presented to The Queen, at a State Banquet hosted at Parliament House in Canberra, on 16 February 1954. It was presented by Robert Menzies, the then Prime Minister, on behalf of the Government and People of Australia.[2]

Roberts describes this brooch as being “Claw- and pavé-set with three large brilliants and a variety of white, pale blue and deep yellow brilliants and baguettes in the from of a sprig of golden wattle (Acacia pycnantha) with a spray of Australian tea tree blossom (Leptopermum laeviatum).[3]

This brooch is now worn occasionally by The Queen, normally to engagements with a connection to Australia; she also notably wore it to the Prince of Wales’s wedding in 2005.[4]
