The Homage

As yet we have no details of the rituals to be included in the Coronation on 6 May 2023 and the ones that will be left out or cut short.  Reports suggest that the entire event might take no longer than one hour.

The Homage could be left out altogether or heavily curtailed by having only the heir do homage to the newly crowned King. Of course there are other possibilities but I do not see a repeat of all the princes and peers being represented because times have changed so much. The following links for the 1953 coronation throw some light on the Homage, how it was done and the words used.

Part XIV. The Homage. Scroll down to this part XIV.
After the bishops "...all the Princes and Peers then present shall do their Fealty and Homage publicly and solemnly unto the Queen..."

From a video of 1953 the Homage lasts from around 1.40.23 to 1.50.25 in the video.

Some discussion from about ten years ago about the Homage on the Royal Coronations Message Board and what the future might be.

Re: The Homage

Just thinking about the adult princes of the blood royal, there are seven currently and four princesses, being William, Harry, Andrew, Edward (Wessex), Richard, Edward (Kent), Michael, Anne, Beatrice, Eugenie, and Alexandra. All might well be present in the Abbey but it is unthinkable that all would do homage. These days I would expect princesses to be treated equally with princes, having seen the Princess Royal walk in processions and take part in a vigil.

The Homage is about earthly power and I think King Charles III would be thinking more of the spiritual strength to be derived from the event. So the Homage becomes unnecessary, even for the bishops, and could be left out in 2023.
