Gold Coach and Walking Grooms - 1953
Nine walking grooms carry walking sticks which serve a practical purpose.
As the State Coach turns corners the walking grooms hold up the slack traces, which we can see here.
" The final problem was the shortage of trained coachmen. They were enlisted from members of the Coaching Club, who had to sacrifice some of the finest moustaches in the country before they could don the royal livery - the royal coachmen are traditionally clean-shaven."
